Please briefly tell me about the first days you started the solar energy project in Vietnam? (Reason, potential and project scale)


My Vietnam solar panel ambitions started in 2015 while in Norwegian oil industry. My mind kept wandering back to the early 2010 working in Vũng Tàu where I had the most amazing time to reconnect with Vietnam culture as a Swedish Vietnamese who left Vietnam at very young age.

I also witnessed Vietnam’s strong economic growth that raised living standards for everyone. I saw incredible passion among my Vietnamese friends for new technology and also their increasing concern about air quality in the cities.  There was definitely hope, excitement and increasing pollution in the air.

“There was definitely hope, excitement and increasing pollution in the air.”

These main factors convinced me that solar energy is the future in Vietnam. I took my life savings, made Vietnam solar case to friends & family for investment and set up Suntiki Solar store in District 3 HCMC just at the right moment in 2017 when the government issued the first Vietnam solar policy draft that allows solar rooftop owners sell electricity at 9.35$ cents per kWh (the Feed-in-Tariff, FiT, Decision No. 11/2017/QD-TTg)

It is now easy to see that establishing Suntiki Solar is a “no-brainer” decision. Solar is the future and in 2019, Vietnam went from nothing to become the leading South East Asian country in terms of installed capacity beating big countries like Australia. But back in 2017 my friends thought I was crazy for believing in an industry so reliant on government policy.

Potential & Scale:

Vietnam has tremendous solar potentials but only with the right government policies that can level the playing field that coal and other industries enjoy. With supportive policies, solar will play a critical role in powering Vietnam’s economic growth with renewable energy and at the same time reduce the air pollution that is hurting our families and children.

All the factors are just about right: geographically, Vietnam has one of the highest sunhours in the world. Solar panel price is at record low. And solar technology continues to push the power limit now at 500 watt for a single panel. There is a huge desire among Vietnamese people to support future technologies and immensely concerned about the coal energy plans. Parents in Vietnam want an environmentally cleaner future for their children.

The biggest factor of all is the 40-year record low oil price in April at 10$ a barrel unfortunately due to covid worldwide situation. While this will sadly impact many oil industry jobs we have an opportunity to bring these highly skilled and experienced engineers over to develop the solar industry.

How was it before the coronavirus began?

Suntiki had phenomenal record projects back in summer 2019 because of Vietnam’s generous feed-in-tariff of 9.35$ cent. The solar subsidy allows solar panel rooftop owners to sell surplus solar energy to EVN to recoup the initial investment cost.

Suntiki installed all over Vietnam from near HCMC, Dong Nai, Cu Chi and all the way up to central Vietnam in beautiful places like Hoi An.

The demand returned to normal level after the summer. Before Covid, Suntiki’s main concern was to keep up with sales inquires in a booming industry.

How is it at the moment?

Suntiki’s priorities changed a bit during the Covid time. We still receive phone calls and we do what we can during the locktime period to consult clients over zalo to maintain social distancing requirement.

However, instead of launching solar energy product advertising, Suntiki tries to find ways to show empathy and solidarity to our friends in Vietnam. Now is not the time to sell and after all, during our 3 years here we have had a fantastic time in Vietnam, people are so supportive of solar cause.

We understand Covid has impacted a lot of businesses. However, we have been lucky because we have limited overhead cost as a lean startup business.

“Money and profit come and go, but compassion stays in the heart and soul.”

However, one of our key commercial projects for a newly-built office in HCMC got delayed. We could have enforced continued installation but we think now is the time to support our clients and neighbours where we can. Money and profit come and go, but compassion stays in the heart and soul.

Also, Suntiki get requests to evaluate rooftops during Covid lockdown. And so we were faced with a tremendously difficult choice: Do we go get the project or decline the client request. As a startup, every project is critical to our business growth.

We took the painful decision to follow the lockdown rules and only consult the client over zalo. The reason is we have seen so many businesses sacrificing much more than us, and so now is the time for Suntiki to be in solidarity with Vietnam. People’s health and Vietnam’s common cause is much more important than company profit and revenue.

How do you look for any financial support from organizations, partners and the Government to survive the project?

We haven’t looked for financial support at all. But it made my day when the government announced to forfeit the yearly 2.000.000 vnd business tax for companies. Every support to reduce fees helps in the difficult Covid time.

Instead, we find ways for Suntiki Solar to support the worst hit poor people during this difficult period by donating to the rice ATM in District 3 HCMC. While our contribution is small compared to Covid impact, we believe our one small drop is one of many small drops that becomes an ocean of safety for the poor and vulnerable in Covid time.

Supporting people in need is a common concept in Vietnam. The lead example is Vietnam’s 100,000 masks donation to Sweden that is in need of good quality masks to prevent the covid virus outspread.

This is especially close to my heart since I am raised up in Sweden and still have friends and family there.

Government policy is key in making solar success story in Vietnam. This is sunshine clear message from the summer 2019 record sales. Every kWh solar energy from a proud rooftop solar power owner contributes directly to Vietnam’s growing economy and Vietnam’s cleaner environment. And so these have to be highly compensated to make solar work. We pay for a bowl of delicious phỏ and so we should pay for a kwh of clean energy.

Latest government policy of reducing solar park FiT rate is in the right direction. Because lower ground mount solar park subsidy will make investors focus on solar rooftop instead. Higher rooftop solar subsidy brings more benefit because solar panels right on top of electricity consumers is more efficient and will not burden the national grid lines like solar parks do.

Unfortunately, the latest Vietnam solar power policy (Decision 13/2020/QD-TTg on April 2020) will hurt the solar industry because it lowers the rooftop solar power FiT subsidy from 9.35$ cents to 8.35$ cents. It will make it more difficult for people who want to invest in rooftop solar power and contribute to an environmentally cleaner Vietnam.

So solar industry and Vietnam environment will thrive more if:

  1. Vietnam solar subsidy will increase more for rooftop solar power.
  2. the highly skilled oil and gas engineers in the struggling oil industry should be given opportunities to join solar industry.

Suntiki Solar will continue our business plan to focus on rooftop solar panel for businesses and factories up to 5 MW. Our mission is to reduce their electric bill and increase their operational profit in a clean environmentally friendly sustainable way.

We had some very high profile potential clients before Covid lockdown and we hope after Covid situation we can resume the projects to make Vietnam a cleaner country.

We also follow the dire water drought situation in Mekong Delta that destroys local businesses and creates life threatening shortage of clean water in the region. We know this drought will continue for another 2 year due to climate change and hydrological conditions as reported by EVN.

I have therefore begun to study the engineering solution of solar desalination reverse osmosis water filter powered by solar panels. This was a Tesla/ Solarcity solar project in a drought stricken area that used solar power to pump dirty water and filter to drinkable quality.

This topic is particularly dear to me since I am originally from Ca Mau, which is a city in Mekong Delta region. And I have experience with reverse osmosis water filter technology with Siemens Water Filter department in Norway and now can combine this with solar energy for Mekong Delta. House owners in Vietnam can now get financial support for rooftop solar energy installations, Ministry of Industry & Trade (MOIT) said on 25 July. Is solar energy profitable now? How much is the support compared to solar investment? Suntiki has the answers.

What is solar financial support in Vietnam?

MOIT officially launched the program to promote the development of rooftop solar power in Vietnam on 25 July 2019. It means that you can get financial support of 3 million đồng/ 1 kWp and up to 9 million đồng to install solar panels on rooftop. The program is for any house owner nation-wide but is only active until 2021.

How much do I actually save compared to the price of solar energy system?

We said cost of solar is on average 90 million đồng for a 5 kWp solar energy system in Vietnam all inclusive package from installers. Because it is 5 kWp, this solar package is eligible for 9 million đồng financial support (which is around 10% of the solar cost) and the lowered final cost is 81 million đồng in total.

A solar investment in 5 kWp system will normally break-even after 5 years. With financial support, the payback period will reduce to around 4 years which is great for house owners thinking about investing. However, for larger pv systems the financial support is smaller compared to the cost of solar panel system because there is a 9 million đồng cap on how much financial support a house owner can receive. Refer to below table to see how much your system is eligible for.

How do you qualify for the solar financial support?

The process is automatic according to Mr. Dũng, Business Manager of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) who further says:

Any household who completes installation of rooftop solar power, signs power purchase agreement will receive immediate support. Apply to all households who install rooftop solar PV.

So all you need to do is to install the solar panel system and apply for EVN to install 2-way meter.

Has anyone received financial support yet? If not, when do we expect this? And how reliable is the promise of solar financial support?

EVN is currently setting up its monitoring software system to ensure financial support is provided expediously and the process is transparent. So house owners who consider to invest in solar can expect more announcement soon. For solar energy industry, announcements from MOIT and EVN have been quite reliable.

Furthermore, the program is backed by international banks and organisations such as German Reconstruction Bank (KfW), the World Bank, USAID and EU.

When is the latest I should install to not miss out on this opportunity?

The process of getting solar energy can take everything from 3 days to 2 months depending how much time you take to shop around to get the best deal. Once you have installed solar panels, it will take you an additional 1-2 weeks to get 2-way meter installed and EVN contract signed. So, to give yourself ample of time, the latest you should begin looking for solar energy is August 2021 if you want to qualify for the solar financial support which is only valid between 2019 to 2021.

Vietnam Solar Energy Policy Discussion:

The above program was approved by MOIT Decision No. 2023/QD-BCT (05 July 2019) and is lead by the Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) who had the kick-off workshop on 25 July. The English name for the program is “Rooftop Solar PV Promotion Program (RTS)”

The goal of the program is to have 100,000 rooftop solar energy systems (or about 1000 MWp) installed by end of 2025.

To put this goal in perspective, the total installed systems according to EVN July report was 9,314 rooftop installation (198 MWp) of which 204 were on power buildings and 7,550 were households with capacity 40.46 MWp.

This means Vietnam has almost reached 10% of its 2025 program rooftop solar energy target when counting number of rooftop (not its capacity).

Furthermore, we know from EVN’s official letter No.3832/EVN-KD that they intend to double the planned RTS by the end of 2019, which means we can expect 18,600 rooftop solar energy installations with capacity of 400 MWp, which is 20% of the 2025 target.

Also, according to EVN June report,154.6 MW of rooftop solar panel installation has rooftop power purchase agreements.

Our solar energy installation in District 3, HCMC was connected to the EVN electric grid on 25 September 2017. The system is 14 REC twinpeak 2 solar panels of 285 Watt peak each. The modules power is given in “Standard Test Conditions” or STC at 25 degC, 1000 W/m2 irradiance and air mass AM1.5.

What is the system power?

The combined DC peak power is 14 x 0.285 = 3.990 kW and the area of all modules is 23.38 m2. The actual DC peak power at STC is above the rated power, can go up to 4.025 kW because the panels usually performs above its power rating. See picture of flashdata below. The solar panels have module efficiency of 17.1%.

What is the optimal string strategy to mitigate the shadows:

7 modules are connected in series to make 1 string. The system has in total 2 strings entirely independent from each other. See picture below on configuration. These strings run to 1-phase inverter model SMA Sunny Boy 3.0 kW. The inverter has European efficiency of 96.4%. The inverter is located on the top floor and is connected to the house electrical system via a circuit breaker switch for the lamp. We use double insulated 4mm2 wires (Cadivi copper wires)

It is usually simpler to have 1 row of 1 string. However, there is water tank that shadows some of the solar panels in the morning. Therefore, we group all the solar panels that gets shadowed into one string. This way we maximize the solar energy output. See picture.

Structural mount: should you hire local construction company instead of full package with solar energy company?

This is a typical tube house with flat roof of concrete materia. So we use galvanized steel beams for the structural design. Main beams consists of 40x80x1.2mm. Purlins supporting solar panels are 30x60x1.2mm (with the long face lying flat down). We use 6mm thick and 50mm long stainless steel bolts to connect to solar panels via the holes in solar panel frames.

It depends on how involved you want to be in the construction and how familiar you are with construction standards. Remember, this installation need to outlast 25 years wear and tear going through major storms rated as natural disasters, typhoons, extensive flooding and more. And the electrical part require an experienced solar engineer to make sure it is installed safe from personal danger as well as making sure the equipment installed correctly.

Suntiki Tips for DYI enthusiasts:

1. Nr.1 offender, we call this the “welder’s spree”. We notice some local construction guys think the solar panel is an indestructable metal piece and will weld right next to it either in front or from behind! For obvious reasons, this will destroy pv output and invalidate your warranty!

2. Some guys will suggest welding your solar panels right into the structure. This will destroy solar panels! Mechanically fasten your solar panels is the only sensible way.

3. Be careful handling connected electrical cables under direct sunlight. It will carry live current if negative and positive touch each other.

4. Need to consider watertight construction:

* Cement the ground plate that interface the penetrated roofparts.

* Use Sikaflex Construction to seal the edges of the cement ground for extra protection against rooftop flooding. This material they call “xúc xích” in Vietnam construction lingo.

5. Some people think the equipment in the house connect into solar panels. This is not correct and will not work. The solar panels connects into inverter that connects into the house electrical system.

Are you using the correct circuit breakers?

In accordance with American electrical standards (NEC standards), we apply double pole circuit breakers in the following locations:
* between solar panels and inverter. One CB for each string.
* 1 AC circuit breaker between inverter and the house electrical system.

So, in total 3 double pole CBs. That way we can cut electricity from both sides of the inverter for maintenance. Furthermore, a good design have these 2 in consideration:

1. Use Schneider C60H-DC breakers for DC connections (between solar panel and breaker.) These are properly rated for direct current connections. Some shops in HCMC sell this. However, they costs significantly more, 700,000 VND, compared to the Schneider Easy9 breakers that cost 150,000 VND but only good for AC electricity.

2. What amp rating should the CB be? For example, is 20 amp too high?

* Let us apply NEC rule that OCPD minimum size should be maximum circuit current = Isc x 1.56

* In this case, 9.66 x 1.56 = 15.0696 amp

* Therefore, theC60H-DC of 16 amp is sufficient in accordance with NEC.

* Too high amp rating is dangerous because the CB does not break when it needs to! Too low amp rating will trigger CB all the time!

Where to place the inverter?

We have SMA 1 phase Sunny Boy 3.0 with 3,000 Watt AC. Strategy for inverter location:

* Enough space to meet minimum inverter clearing room requirements

* In cool shaded environment, definitely not exposed to sun.

* Close to solar panels to minimize wire length. Also close to house electrical connection at the floor CB.

* NEC require connecting inverter at the far end of the main distribution panel (MDB). And there are further rules depending on MDB amp rating and solar energy system power. However, in Vietnam, the typical house does not have a centralized MDB. If there is a centralized MDB, it consists of a number of separate circuit breakers as opposed to a central sub panel with many connected circuit breakers. In this case, we recommend deviation from NEC requirement by locating inverter to the nearest floor circuit breaker and make the connection there. This minimize the electrical wire from top floor to bottom but where the connection would still be the same.

* The major startup issue is the ground fault when the inverter is not grounded. If any issue, I recommend to contact a solar engineer rather than your local electrician because it probably an inverter software setting fault rather than electricity fault. But, unless you are electrical engineer with excellent knowledge of inverter, I don’t recommend DYI approach because handling equipment with live electricity is dangerous.

How many kwh do you get for 4,000 Watt?

The benefit of flat rooftop is that we can set ideal tilt, which is 15 degree in Ho Chi Minh City. This gives us a maximum possible of 5,785 kwh first year according to PVGis. This is represented by the blue line in graph. However, the real production in year 2018 is 4,847 kwh which is about 15% less than the maximum possible. This is due to following:
* We switched off pv systems for some days for testing.
* The shadow effect of the tank in the mornings.

From the graph we see that for 4,000 watt DC system we have average month production of 400 kwh. This is with shading effect. On ideal with no shadows, we should get 450 kwh.

The reasons the system is producing less solar energy than the model are:

1/ is due to the water tank shadows. It affects one string in the morning from 7 to 10 am.

2/ we have disconnected the system from time to time to test our battery system.

Did you get the correct EVN 2-way meter?

The system began production on 25 September 2017 and were the first solar energy system in District 3 to have EVN meter. However, this meter malfunctioned and we had to replace by 18 January 2018. So unfortunately, our EVN meter is counting from this day, 4 months after our system is installed.

From the below table we see that during period of 18 January 2018 to 02 April 2019 we have:

The office has 2x 1hp aircon. At least one aircon is used at all times. The office pays EVN residential progressive rates, and with an electric bill of at least 500,000 vnd/ month, the solar energy offset the highest rates of 2,701 VND/ kwh.

How much money do you save? Now we can answer the question you have been eyeing for!

The quick answer: 450 kwh x 2,086 vnd = 938,700 vnd/ month… but this is not correct.

But, wait, it gets better, the above was for 2017. Recently, government came with new incentives for us:

1. 2,086 vnd/ kwh increased for 2018 period.

2. EVN rates just increased electricity prices by 8%. So…, redoing the calculation again with new rates:

The cost of solar energy system varies from 18,000,000 to 30,000,000 VND/ kW.  

So, for 4,000 watt we have: 72 – 120,000,000 VND.

So, on these number, the low cost solar energy will break even at 5 years and at high cost it will break even in 8 years.

SUMMARY: A lot of business owners ask us how much they can get paid if they install solar energy after June 2019. This answer is important to know because the rate impact how long time it takes to recoup from our investment in solar energy.

Currently under discussion (as of March 2019) is a proposal to apply different FIT rates of 1,525 to 2,486 đ/ kwh ( 6. 0.067 – 0.109 $ cents/ kwh), depending on both locations and type of solar energy installation.

When a solar energy system produce more electricity than what the owner needs for his own use, then this excess solar energy goes to the main power grid. The rate which EVN pays the owner is called Feed-in-tariff rate or abbreviated FIT.

In April 2017, Vietnam issued the first solar FIT rate of 2,086 đ/ kwh (9.35 $ cents/ kwh) but only for solar energy systems that is operational before June 2019.

Since then government has approved 138 solar energy projects with 6,100 MW capacity to be developed by 2021, and 221 other projects are on the waiting list.


The previous rate was 2,086 vnd/kwh according to decision 11/2017/QD-TTg issued on April 2017. So here is a basic comparison of difference where green marked is increase in rate and red marked is decrease in rates.
